Insider Tips:

The Story of the Prague Castle - the permanent exhibition tells the story of the main castle complex in the country and the people connected with it - from the rulers and presidents to the aristocrats, courtiers, famous artists, builders, architects, scholars, tradesmen and servants. It is a story of a complex that conceals the mystery of the last place of rest of the most important Bohemian rulers and saints, a place that houses the Czech crown jewels and the St Vitus treasury, but also a place that serves as the dignified seat of the head of the Czech Republic.

Hundred Spired Prague

The City of Prague is crowned with many complimentary names. One of the most frequently used names is ‘The City of a Hundred Spires’ on Vltava River. Here are just a few of them worth visiting:

Lesser Town Bridge Tower - essentially, the tower at the western end of the Charles bridge comprises two towers of different appearance, origin and size. The highest of the towers is the youngest part of the entire Charles Bridge and it is 45 meteres high.

Petrin Observation Tower - The Petřín Lookout Tower was directly inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was built by the Czech Tourist Club, which had attended the Exposition Universelle in 1889 in Paris and decided to construct a similar tower in Prague. Height – 66 metres, 299 steps.

Powder Tower - From the 17th century, the new tower served as a storehouse for gunpowder and it has been called the Powder Tower since that time. The Powder Tower gate was erected on the bottom of a defensive moat that was nine metres below today’s street level and a bridge originally led up to the gateway. Height of tower gallery – 44 metres, 186 steps.

Old Town Bridge Tower - After it was completed, the tower was not only protected by the strength of its walls, but also by the everlasting, palindromic magic formula “Signa te, signa, temere me tangis et angis”. This was essentially a routine form of magical protection for the building against demons and it was used in many other situations. In 1621, the severed heads of 27 executed Czech lords were displayed here. They were not taken down until ten years later, when they were removed and buried in an unknown location. They have still not been found to this day. Height 47 metres, 138 steps.

Old Town City Hall with its world famous atronomical clock. The towers height is 59 m. On its top the tower is diverting from its vertical by 23 cm to the south and 15 cm to the west. Thanks to the tower’s anti-barrier approach everybody can access the sight-seeing gallery of the tower today.

Tower of St.Nicholas Church - After the communists seized power in the former Czechoslovakia, the former belfry and watchtower once again became an observation post. From the 1950s, the infamous Czechoslovak secret police (STB) had a base and listening post here to monitor events at the embassies of Western states. Height 74 metres, 215 steps.

Television Tower in Zizkov - Amongst all Prague towers it is the tallest. This tower is visible from all directions. One of the most interesting features of the tower is a restaurant, which was constructed at 63 m above the ground. The viewing terrace was constructed at a height of 34 m.
